Since the Lord's Resistance Army (LRA) waged war against the Ugandan government two decades ago, northern Uganda has witnessed more than 30,000 children abducted. Their parents murdered and homes burnt down, children were kidnapped at night, taken to the LRA training camps (the Bush), forced to fight as soldiers or serve as sex slaves.

Their parents murdered and homes burnt down, children were kidnapped at night, taken to the LRA training camps (the Bush), forced to fight as soldiers or serve as sex slaves.

A strengthened military campaign known as Operation Iron Fist in 2002 had liberated many children from the Bush, while many escaped as the rebels weakened. Reintegrating former abductees back to normal life has become the objective of many aid organizations. Three of the best known reintegration centers for former abductees are Gulu Support the Children Organization (GUSCO), World Vision Children of War Rehabilitation Center in Gulu, and Rachelle Rehabilitation Center in Lira.
